I just finished reading A Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh. I came upon it after hearing the minister at my church read from it. It is a little book written in the 1950's primarily for a female audience. The lessons it contains on simplicity, connecting to oneself, and connecting to others transcend both time and sex. While by no means explicitly a book about leadership I believe its message is essential for leaders if they are going to be truly effective and have an impact on the world.
Here is a passage on change that I read last night:
We have so little faith in the ebb and flow of life...We leap at the flow of the tide and resist in terror its ebb. We are afraid it will never return. We insist on permanency, on duration, on continuity; when only the only continuity possible, in life as in love, is in growth, in fluidity - in freedom...The only real security is not owning or possessing, not demanding or expecting, not hoping, even. Security...lies in neither looking back to what was in nostalgia, nor forward to what might be in dread or anticipation, but living in the present...and accepting it as it is now.
In what ways are you resisting the ebb and flow of life?
